RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Actually Leo's stock 2004 800 Renegade has had a lot of success. Andy won the IWA Pro Stock high point title in 2005, 2006, & 2007 on this same sled. The best part is that Leo can trail ride it this winter and race it again next summer. Our stock XP is ready for the trails. Bring on the snow.

RE: Sad News

I really enjoyed being around Jeff during his IWA days. He was wise beyond his age. Everybody liked him for many reasons. I gained even more respect for him when he made a mistake on the course and then when the heat was over he rushed over to apoligize over and over. That doesn't happen very often. I will never forget the big smile that Jeff and the rest of the Moyles had when Jeff won Pro Open at Wild Rose on his very trick "skinny sled". Our thoughts and Prayers are with the Moyle family. RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

I have heard of more racers that will join the class with 600 mod in it, I have yet to hear 1 person say they would quit the class if 600 mod got added to it that currently runs the class full time. Who are they? Like I said many times, if we are going to add more Pro entries on current looking sleds to the show, I am all for it.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Top 10 Pro Open= 2 Yamaha - 3 Ski Doo - 1 Cat - 4 Polaris 14 in Pro Open qualified for points Money Only 6 in Pro Stock This is why we asked the Pro Open drivers that do not run Pro Stock if they would run if it gets changed to Mod 600. Brian Jr. might run a sled with an engine from Mike's Ice oval sled. Nobody else wanted to build & maintain 2 sleds. One sled is enough was the typical reply.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

I am just trying to point out the flaws in the logic that some people on here are using. (The fact that Howie never had his brand new highly modified sled on the water until the Fredric race is why he struggled there.) It is hard to deny that Howie has been a dominate force for many years. He dominated on his Stock ZX sleds before he had revs. He is going to be out front no matter what sled he chooses to tune and ride. The same goes with Andy. He helped set up Brian's stock ZX and it always runs at the front too. Nates sled is Andys old stock Rev. I am just trying to make sure that it is clear that not all Stock revs dominate, it is only a few set up by tuners with pretty successful track records on mod & stock sleds. I thanked Howie a few times for not running in Pro Stock this year. It made the wins come a whole lot easier.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Like I said before if we are going to gain entries by switching to 600 Mods, I am all for it. Let's hear how many drivers we will be adding by making the change. So far we have Derek and maybe Brian Jr., anybody else?? The problem that I have with the logic that you must have a Ski-doo is the fact that the stock ski-doos that everybody is talking about have been set up by or had a lot of direction from Howie, Andy, or myself. The Mod sleds that we have aimed at the water usually run at the front too. Howie never lost a single heat on his mod this year, maybe we should change the 800 mod class too. If Howie shows up, you know that he is going to win.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Quote from Scott Mosher "If you want to make a stock class MAKE IT 100% STOCK. Seats and all. Then you can call it stock. Stock track, stock ignition, stock shafts, stock skis, stock everything. Then, Maybe is would be a cost effective class. Then MAYBE people could use their trail sleds. You will definitely have a class of sleds that dont handle for Dog Doo. But at least the factories will like it. (NOT!)" Scott, Our Pro Stock sled is my trail sled. I rode it last winter and I will trail ride it this winter. The motor has never even had the head ever removed. It has stock jetting, stock ignition(never been reprogrammed), stock shafts. It does have shorter front shocks and a stiffer center spring. It also has the airbox removed and air filters added to aid in engine longevity. We have used the same shocks and springs on the last 3 stock sleds that we have raced and trail ridden. Clutching, suspension setup and hundreds of laps on the test pond are what makes our STOCK sled win consistently. Chad never sank the stock sled all year. The mod sank 3 times. I totally disagree with your opinions of Stock class racing. All forms of snowmobile racing have Stock classes.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

My greatest concern is having the Grantsburg pit area look like we went back 10 years. I am not worried about keeping the 800, I am worried about going in the wrong direction. The rules that require suspensions and current body styles were created for promotional reasons. Do we want to be a just a "racers" circuit or continue with why the IWA was created? A large part of getting respect and recognition from the industry is dependent on current equipment. When photos from our races show new sleds, it helps our sport. If all of the sleds are old, it hurts the sport. Unfortunately it is that simple. Think about what race sleds should be displayed at Hay Days to make the most positive impression of the IWA? Everybody in the industry attends this event. I trail rode our stock sled last year and I will be trail riding it this year. When it is not current, I will buy a new one. You can easily sell an old stock sled, good luck with an outdated mod.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Just so everybody is clear, if I was only looking out for my own interests, I probably would not have given Howie 2 base gaskets at Grantsburg. I want to see the best show possible. To me when you have multiple mod classes, they water down the importance of the win in both classes. When you have a Stock winner & a mod winner that is not the case. The reason that I like the class format that we currently have, it is very easy for the averge spectator to understand. I always tell people that the classes are set up like snocross. We have a stock & mod class for semi- pro & pro riders. The stock class compliments the mods. A big problem with grass drags, ice drags & oval racing is that the classes are very confusing to spectators. Nobody understands the rules except the drivers. When I look at race results I have no idea why there are so many similar classes. When you start mixing different types of sleds it is very confusing. I think that Stock 600 makes more sense than 800, but when I brought that up last year not one person agreed with me. In the spring there are numerous 1 season old snocross sleds for sale at very attractive prices. To me from a promotion point of view, we need to make the Pro sleds look like the current sleds being sold. That alone gives our sport a lot more respect. I hope when people build new sleds, they start with a current body style. We have been plagued before with the stigma that we run old junk. (I was one of them. When I went to current body styles, finding sponsors became easy.)

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

I think that this is premature with doom & gloom for this class. I would wait until after Wausau to claim entries are down. By looking at who raced at grantsburg, I think that we will have plenty of entries in both Semi-Pro Stock & Pro Stock. You can not really count the Ely entries, because a lot of the drivers that normally compete in both stock classes were at Frederic. Pro Stock is growing. We have seen a lot of drivers advance to Pro Stock in the last 2 season.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

I am all for the best show possible. If we get more Pros running both classes I am all for it. I do not know if this will get more of the Pros to run both classes or if they only want to maintain 1 sled. When you run 2 sleds you double the workload and the maintenance costs. Who will we add with the new class? I would love to see all of the current Pro racers run both classes. If this is the answer, I am all for it. I have spoke with a few that are totally against this idea. So I think it would be a good idea to survey all of annual members to get an idea if they would run both classes.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Here is why we went with the classes we currently have. We used to have Semi-Pro & Pro, both were mod classes. The semi-pro class allowed up to 600. Later we allowed 700's, but they had a delayed start. The problem was when a driver was supposed to move to Pro, they needed to change from a dialed in sled to a larger motor & race better drivers. The majority of the semi-pro drivers never moved up to Pro. When the stock classes were added we started seeing new drivers stick with the sport and advance to Pro a lot faster. I have seen for years new drivers enter the sport that have no idea how to tune a mod. In my opinion the newer drivers progress a lot faster when they only have to worry about driving & handling. There are a lot of us that have ran exactly what they are running and we can give very accurate clutching, jetting, & handling tips. When they are inexperienced and running combinations of aftermarket mods, I have seen a lot of new drivers struggle & never succeed. I know that the classes are not perfect, but I still do not see how adding another mod class will make the show better. I would like to hear from everbody that will run in the IWA 600 Pro class. With all the current snocross sleds out there, it should be easy to find used 600 mods of 3 brands. I would like to know what IWA Pros that currently do not run Pro Stock will compete on a Mod 600 & Mod 800. If we are going to get more of our top racers in both Pro classes, I think that it is a great idea, if not then leave as is.

RE: Watercross Trivia

The first non Ski-doo to win the big class at Grantsburg was a Polaris driven by Kevin Candler of Goshen, Indiana in 1988. The next was Dale Lindbeck in 1996 on a Cat, then Mike Roe in 1998 on a Polaris. The next was Jeff Fischer in 2000 on a Yamaha.

RE: Watercross Trivia

I know all of Skips trivia except 5 & 22, question 11 is debatable, I am color blind so ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen some pretty ugly sleds over the years. I know that this shows how old I am, but at the same time I am impressed that I can remember this much. I have a hard time remembering what day it is. Who was the first driver to win the Pro Open class at Grantsburg that was not riding a ski-doo? Revn

RE: Father-Mother - Son-Daughter Teams in IWA history

My Great Grandpa Bill Soderbeck , Grandpa Ray Maki, and Great Uncle Dale Soderbeck ran at one point or another. Bill won the oldest man on water title at Siren one year!! Joy never ran as far as I know, but Gina did as well as her husband (my uncle) Doug Danner who was a champion in the 80's. ANNNNNNNND....My mom skipped one year at Yellow Lake. It's pretty much a family affair here folks!
